Guru Gobind Singh, the Tenth and the last Guru of the Sikh faith was born Gobind Rai Sodhi on 22nd  December 1666 at Patna, in Bihar. His father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, the Ninth Guru, was then travelling across Bengal and Assam. Returning to Patna in 1670, he directed his family to return to Punjab. On the site of the house at Patna in which Gobind Rai was born and where he spent his early childhood now stands a sacred shrine, Takht Sri Harimandar Sahib, one of the five most honoured seats of religious authority (takht, lit. throne) for the Sikhs. Guru Gobind Singh was formally installed Guru on 29th March 1676.

A prayer composed by Guru Gobind Singh Ji:

Deh Siva Bar Mohe Ehai
(Grant Me, O Lord, this boon)

Subh Karaman Te Kabhun Na Taron
(That from good deeds I never shirk)

Na Daron Ar So Jab Jaye Laroun
(Should not fear when I confront any foe)

Nischai Kar Apni Jeet Karoun
(With my Faith I verily triumph!)

Ar Sikh Houn Apne Hi Man Ko
(And mould my mind that I)

Eh Lalach Haun Guon Tau Ucharoun
(Crave to Cherish Thy Grace Forever)

Jab Aav Ki Avadhi Nidan Bane
(When the hour of destiny strikes)

Att-Hi Ran Mein Tab Juajh Maroun
(Then I should die striving in life's battlefield)
